VENTILATION

Ensure Proper Ventilation

  • Effective ventilation is important since it increases the amount of clean outdoor air, removes pollutants through filtration and helps reduce the build-up of excessive moisture.
  • Open doors and windows when temperature and humidity levels permit. However, be mindful of outdoor allergens during spring and fall seasons.
  • Make sure that mechanical filters are in place, that they fit well and that they are changed periodically according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use of home mechanical air systems, with good filtration, can control dust levels. Some additional air cleaners, such as electrostatic systems or ion generators, may be stand alone or part of the home system. If these additional air cleaners are used, make sure they are certified to UL 867 and are certified by the state of California for minimal ozone release.
  • Make sure that fuel burning furnaces, fireplaces, heaters, range tops, exhaust fans and other appliances are vented to the outside well away from windows and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) intakes.

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as a collection source for a variety of contaminants that have the potential to affect health, such as mold, fungi, bacteria, and very small particles of dust. The removal of such contaminants from the HVAC system and home should be considered as one component in an overall plan to improve indoor air quality.  Research by the U.S. EPA has demonstrated that HVAC system cleaning may allow systems to run more efficiently by removing debris from sensitive mechanical components. Clean, efficient systems are less likely to break down, have a longer life span, and generally operate more effectively than dirty systems.

How should a residential HVAC system be cleaned?

The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ Source Removal methods of cleaning. This requires a contractor to place the system under negative pressure, through the use of a specialized, powerful vacuum. While the vacuum draws air through the system, devices are inserted into the ducts to dislodge any debris that might be stuck to interior surfaces. The debris can then travel down the ducts to the vacuum, which removes it from the system and the home.

How often should residential HVAC systems be cleaned?

Frequency of cleaning depends on several factors, not the least of which is the preference of the home owner. Some of the things that may lead a home owner to consider more frequent cleaning include:

• Smokers in the household.

• Pets that shed high amounts of hair and dander.

• Water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system.

• Residents with allergies or asthma who might benefit from a reduction in the amount of indoor air pollutants in the home’s HVAC system.

• After home renovations or remodeling.

• Prior to occupancy of a new home.

We used VioClean when we had a broken pipe this winter in the middle of the night. The water damage was extensive spreading from the first floor to our finished basement. We were very impressed with VioClean - everything from their prompt response, to their incredibly professional staff, state of the art equipment prepped to go, and their ability to help us manage and repair all the water damage so quickly. They were quick to come, assess the water damage, and immediately started work so that no mold issues arose and no additional water damage occurred. We couldn't be happier with the outcome and how quickly we were able to get our lives back to normal.

Vioclean came over for a simple carpet and couch clean and one of their technicians was able to detect that we most likely had a leak and mold problem. The odd smell had been noticeable to us in our mud room but very minor so had not thought it was no big deal. After a little investigation turns out we had a leak and our ceiling was pretty much rotting in the attic and didn't know much about the danger of mold in a home but all I can say is, thank God it did not end up worse. Great guys, good work, and would recommend.
